Tanzania’s president has stated that when she initially became president, there were many who doubted her ability to govern since she was a woman.
“Some don’t believe women can be better presidents,” Samia Suluhu Hassan told the BBC. “We are here to prove them.”
After her predecessor died in office, the 61-year-old was sworn in in March.
She is Africa’s sole female political leader at the moment. Ethiopia’s president is purely ceremonial.
“At first, some of my government employees rejected me as simply another woman,” Ms Samia added, “but they quickly embraced my leadership.”
“But this isn’t only in Africa; in America, [Hillary] Clinton got to a point where we believed she’d be president, but she couldn’t,” she said.
